First Annual Open Exhibition

All the gallery spaces will be available for an Open Exhibition as the last one for this year. This is a great opportunity to show your work in a Grade II listed Merchants House in Great Yarmouth.

We look forward to receiving your entries to create an exciting end to a very enjoyable first year for South Quay Gallery.

Works will be selected by 3 judges: John Crossley, Molly Thomson and Graham Crowley – see bottom of page.

Everyone is welcome to enter a maximum of 2 works in any media except Video. You can also enter and sell artworks that are part of an edition – please see terms and conditions for details. We will hold a Private View on Friday 20th November and the exhibition will run from 21st November until 20th December.

With each entry can we please have a digital photo of the work, your name and contact details, the size and medium. You are welcome to include a paragraph of text about the work, and a short biography if you wish, for inclusion on the website during the exhibition. However, neither these details, nor your name ,will be visible to the judges as the work is to be selected according to its own merit.

Terms & Conditions (please read)
  • Cost — £15 for one entry or £25 for two.
  • Entry is digital and applications are open until 30 September.
  • Please supply up to two images of a three-dimensional work; one image of a two-dimensional work. No videos. Images should show the works unglazed / not behind glass.
  • Size — artworks (including frames) should be no larger than 60 × 60 cm (or 60 x 60 x 60 cm for three-dimensional artworks).
  • If you are submitting work as an edition, further copies from the edition are to be sold unframed in the case of prints. If works are sold from an edition you will be notified by email at the time of purchase with the address and email address of the buyer. It will be your responsibility to ensure that they receive the artwork within two weeks of purchase. If an artwork does not arrive, the buyer will be refunded in full.
  • Artwork offered for sale in an edition must be the same size and in the same medium as the artwork submitted for exhibition (e.g. you cannot offer giclée prints of an etching or painting).
  • Your name, work description and biography are not shown to the judges — works are selected on merit alone.
  • The selection panel consists of John Crossley, Molly Thomson and Graham Crowley. Their decision is final.
  • Selection announced on 31 October.
  • Delivery of works: 10am–6pm on 15 November or 10am–5pm on 16 November. Packaging to be removed and brought back for collection.
  • Works may be delivered by courier to arrive on one of the delivery dates, but the sender must use a signed for service and the gallery will accept no liability for any loss or damage during transit. You are advised to notify the gallery of the delivery in advance.
  • Insurance to be covered by the artist.
  • Unsold artworks are to be collected from the gallery during opening hours on 21st and 22nd December or between 6th and 10th January. Please note that the gallery will be closed from 23rd December and will re-open on 6th January. Items not collected by the end of the collection period will be liable to a £5 per day storage charge. If you are unable to collect within these dates, collection outside of opening hours can be arranged by prior appointment.
  • South Quay Gallery will retain 25% of all sale prices.

The Judges

John Crossley

John Crossley

Based in Suffolk, formerly London, John studied sculpture at St Martin’s School of Art in the 1970s and worked with Sir Anthony Caro. He was Gallery Manager at Camden Arts Centre and a Senior Lecturer at Chelsea School of Art, among other institutions. Over the last 40 years his work has developed into painting, exhibited in solo and group shows internationally and held in public and private collections. He is represented by Eames Fine Art and Mandell’s Gallery.

Molly Thomson

Molly Thomson

Born in Scotland, Molly studied sculpture and art history at Edinburgh University and Edinburgh College of Art, then gained an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art. She has taught at Falmouth and at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, Oxford, and is currently Subject Leader for Painting at Norwich University of the Arts. She works from her studio outside Norwich, exhibiting regularly both nationally and internationally.

Graham Crowley

Graham Crowley

Born in Romford in 1950, Graham studied at St Martin’s College of Art and the Royal College of Art. He was Visiting Fellow at St Edmund Hall and Artist in Residence to Oxford University in 1982–83, and Professor of Painting at the Royal College of Art from 1998 to 2006. He won First Prize in the John Moores Painting Prize in 2023. His publications include “Graham Crowley” by Martin Holman (2009), “I Don’t LIKE Art” (2015), “A Love Of Many Things” (2019) and “Dark Matter” (2024). His work is held in public and private collections worldwide; he is represented by DomoBaal.
